Gentlemen! So a couple of weeks ago i took my 06' Explorer in to get the transmission and timing components checked. The truck was shifting hard into reverse and sometimes when i shifted to reverse it would not engage. So, i was told it had to be rebuilt. I agreed and told them to do it. When the guy had the transmission apart he called me and told me i could come see what was wrong with it. Weird, usually they dont let you know exactly whats being replaced :). All i can say is it was a total mess. thing was 2.5 quarts low on fluid and destroyed pretty much everything. So after the rebuild they told me that my timing components are good and they dont see a need to replace them. I am calling BS on it because i can here the chain/s rattling inside. But anyways, so i picked up the truck drove it home. Ran great the whole drive home. Go to 711 come back out and go into drive and the thing would not go into 2nd gear. once it hit 20mph the engine would just rev up. So i took it back in and they said there could have been some residual crap left inside. So they flushed it again and said they were pretty confident that everything was out. So i pick it up and drove home and thing is driving great. But once again i go to the store come back out and thing would not go past 1st gear. So i called them again and said it will be dropped back off the following morning. So the next day i woke up and for the hell of it decided to take it for another run. Because something just wasn't adding up. It did it again. BUT i think i may have found the problem. I have always had problems with my shifter getting stuck or just being a pain in the butt to pull back. usually id spray some Windex on the guide and it would be as smooth as butter. When i put it into drive nothing was happening. it would not go forward. So i tapped the shifter and what do you know it engages into drive. Now what i think is happening is when im driving if i hit the slightest bump in the road or accidentally touch it. It somehow is shifting itself into neutral. Even though it says its in drive. Which would explain the engine revving up but not moving forward. also while driving i can easily push the lever into neutral without pressing the shifter button. I have been driving it all day today being careful how i put it into drive. and have not had one single problem. My question is, i can get a whole new shifter assembly for $136. Is this something that is somewhat easy to replace? I know there is linkage to the transmission. Which is my main concern.

Sorry for the long story. But i thought it would help to have the whole backstory on what was going on.

$136 for a shifter? For about $17 you can install a Ford Flex-styele shifter instead of the big, ugly, phallic-looking OEM shifter. I installled one on my Sport Trac. It was very easy.

Here's the video I used as a guide:

Have them readjust the transmission shift linkage before you buy a new shifter.
