2007 Ford Explorer
Ok, first off I'm new here so hello everyone! I have a 2007 Eddie Bauer Edition Explorer, has a touch over 190k miles on it. New trans put in at around 145-150k. A week and a half - two weeks ago I was driving it from my house to a class and when I got about 5 minutes away, the front passenger-side wheel locked up and the car sharply veered off to right side of the road. Fortunately I was able to recover back to going straight and the wheel was fine, but then the traction control light in the dash started blinking and stayed on.

This was the first time I had EVER had anything crazy like that happen. So I kept driving for a little longer and everything was fine. Since then, it's happened four more times at random, distance driven had no correlation. There is a grinding noise (almost like gears) that comes up from the location of wheel as well. I took it to my local shop and the owner said he looked at it (almost seemed like he didn't even believe me when I told him the problem when I dropped it off) and it had thrown two lines of code telling me they both indicated a problem VERY expensive to fix.

My question is does anyone know what the problem could possibly be? I don't know the codes off-hand but I have a buddy with a ford programmer that could get em for me. Any input greatly appreciated!

It probably is the ABS sensor in your right front wheel. It happened to me luckily on a red light so I was stopped but could not move too much; the wheel was locked. I shut off the engine and restarted and was able to get home. Replaced the whole hub assembly since the sensor is built in and no more problems.

Can you get it scanned to confirm your case ? In my case it showed which wheel was affected.

Considering the mileage, I would say that it is the hub bearing that has gone bad and is causing the intermittent signal causing the RSC system to kick in. Like mentioned by ExplorerPL, you will most likely need to replace the hub assembly on that side and if no records on when they were last done I would do both front hub assemblies.

Crap the rsc can apply breaks without pressing the break peddel?
