I just put 10w30 in my 94 explorer based off of some recommendations. The manual calls for 5w30 however and I am starting to wonder if I should drain it and put 5w30 in the engine. Did I make a mistake? Can this higher weight damage the engine at all?
I live in Detroit and am moving to new york so the car will be driving in cold weather a bit I imagine. I also will be doing alot of traveling this summer in the truck in various climates.

It won't cause any problems. At least, the viscosity won't...I'm a big fan of synthetics (usually Redline) but not so much Mobil 1. That's just me though. SOunds like you'll be driving enough that you'll be changing it out again pretty soon anyway.

10w30 is what i use.

edit: should make that clear. all year round.. in all my fords

With it still being colder weather I'd stick with the 5W-30, the 10w-30 shouldn't hurt, I used it in my previous 92 explorer for awhile til I switched to synthetic then went 530 route. So you'll be alright with it unless its really cold then your truck will start a little harder for the first start of the day.

The quality of the oil is most important, and select a starting weight for your region. 20 weights aren't good for Northern states, the 0/5/10's are all fine for up there. Choose the best oil you can, regular/semi-synthetic/synthetic, and the best synthetics like Amsoil. If you select the very best like Amsoil, you can do the oil with their filter just once a year(or 25,000 miles). That will save time and money. Regards,

So I should not drain out the 10w30 mobil1 and replace with 5w30?

Either oil you use is fine. The 5w30 is easier on your motor than the 10w30 but just by a little bit.

No, they are a wash, skip the weight subject, concentrate on the oil brand and quality level. Any 0 weight through 20 weight(0w30, 20w30) of the same brand and same price(say $2/qt.), they are so close it's not worth discussing.

A $3.50/qt. oil of any brand is better than any $2/qt. oil of any brand. The same goes for comparing a $5/qt. oil to the cheaper oils, or the best oils at over $7/qt., they are better than the Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec etc. Shop around by price and brand, good luck.

ive been running castol 10-30 in my 92 for the past 150K miles (for a total of 250K) It doesnt tick, tock, or burn oil.....matter of opinion realy

I personally like 5W30 Valvoline Synthetic Oil, it seems to have done great with my engines it had helped with a motor tick in the past. Buying by the 5qt jug is cheaper than by the quart at advance, at advance ya pay bout $4.00 a quart.

Cool, now I feel a bit better ;) I am glad I use mobil 1, I guess that I will go to 5w30 after the next oil change. Possibly even amsoil too.
You guys are all so helpful here, i cant wait till I am knowledgeable enough to give back. I know alot about computers and a little about cars, but I am learning more and more thanks to yall.

Walmart is great for buying most oils locally. I get the five qt. jugs there for my lesser cars. Advance had a special last year on Pennzoil synthetic, which is the best almost-high-end synthetic. It was $2.98 then per quart, I got about 15 bottles then.

I usually gets meh oil at the walmart.. .. .. gosh i hate that place, but I do get certain things there, oil and auto supplys make up the bulk of it.
Is it your opinion that valvoline syn is better then mobil1 syn? I have used mobil1 for several years now, it is always good to hear the opinion of other though.

I think most of the local bought synthetics are about the same, with the Pennzoil being a small step better. I know Royal Purple can be had in some places, but I still consider that a harder to come by oil. It is among the 2-3 best you can get, and the price reflects that.

I like the Amsoil as best for their guarantee of 25,000 miles of lifespan when using their filter. The cost for the oil/filter is just over $50, for one year of service that is very good. A lot of people easily change their oil 5-10 times per year. That's a lot of labor savings to do it just once.

No, I'm not saying Valvoline is better than Mobil, I just like using it from the results I've had, I usually change every 5k with valvoline, I personally don't like leaving my oil in any longer than that.

I have used the Valvoline(my favorite brand), Castrol, Mobil 1, and the Pennzoil I still have on hand. Those synthetics are all good, much better than basic oil, but don't leave out the drain plug like in a commercial. I have always done 3-4000 mile oil services, until this Amsoil. With Amsoil the quality of the oil and filters is good enough to truly extend the interval. With a real bypass system you can keep the oil clean enough to feel comfortable doing it. Regards,
