I'm planning on getting 2 Alpine Type-R 12"s for my 96 XLT but I'm not sure what amp I can get that would be best for these subs? I've always knew a little about subs but never as much about amps. Anyone know what amp I could get or how many channels, ohms, and all that type of info I'd need to power these two Subs? I just got a Pioneer 7400MP deck so all I need now is the speakers and subs and I'll be ready to go finally :D

PS - not trying to spend tons on an amp so please let me know the best for the buck that will be good for these 2 Alpines.

restricted access from that site while at work so I'll have to check it out later when I'm off. Thanks though  I was told a MONO amp would be better though running those subs? I don't know anything about amps when it comes to mono, 2 channel, 4 channel etc. I never knew what was best for what etc. My speakers are powered just fine by my deck (Pioneer 7700MP) so I'm only looking for a good amp to power the subs by themselves :D

you're gonna want a MONO block amp, I use a Hifonics Brutus 1500W at 1ohm for 3 12" JL's, which i think are around the same as your type R's and it runs awesome.

Okay and how can I tell if the MONO amp I'm looking at is good enough for these 2 Type R 12s? That's what I'm not sure? Would I be running those subs at 1 OHM 2 3 or 4 and what should I look for in determing if the amp is good enough for the subs or not?

that depends on the subs, and the way you wire it, im really bad at figuring that **** out...

look for a mono block amp that is about 700-800Watts @ 2ohms or whatever you wire your subs for might be 4 <--- important, youll see a lot of amps that are like 109509175 watts.... @ 1ohm... but like 200Watts at 2ohm :P

come to think of it my buddy has 2 12" type R's and they sound wicked ill call him and ask what kind of amp he's got ill post it for you tommorow.

i recently bought 2 12' inch alpine type r subs and im pretty happy with them... they are good subs but require a pretty powerful source of power, im pushing them with a JBL GTO1201.1 II
i also have 2 12' inch JBL speakers P1220D II, and this are far superior.
whenever you get an amp make sure you get a known brand i'd recommend
the Kenwood KAC-9102D or the Alpine MRD-M605.
also make sure you get the right enclosure for the speakers, this is just as important as getting the right amp.
regarding the price of the amps i'd say look on Ebay, i worked at bestbuy and their prices are VERY VERY high as with every other retailer. i did get great discounts but sometimes i could find whatever i was looking for even a lower price.... whatever u decide to do keep us posted!!!

I'm waiting! Did you ever call him?

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking now I might just scratch the idea of 2 12s and go with a really powerful 15 instead. I was looking at the 15 inch L7 Sub by Kicker.
I figured I could power this sub by itself with a MONO block amp instead of bridging the amp to work for 2 subs. Does that sound like a good idea? I figure this 15 by Kicker would hit as good as 2 12" Type R's?

I have 2 type R 12" Subs. They are 500W RMS, 1500 Peak Each. If you want an fairly affordable amp which will power it wonderfully, you might want to go with the Rockford Fosgate P6002. (I work at best buy and i do installs on the side so i knwo my stiff) The 6002 pushes around 300rms to each channel, whcih is more than enough. You dont want to get an amp that will push 500rms, cause then theyll definitely blow. Any other questons, pm me or send me an im at No1dan2001 and i can answer any questions you have.Def try ebay or (dead links), b/c best buy is way expensive. But yea hpoe this helps

I'd go with a Sundown 1000D.

Mista808, your amp should put out less rms than the subs can handle. THEN you will have no chance of BLOWING them!!!

Sorry, but you are wrong. In fact, it's not usually power that blows subs. Clipping and distortion are what usually kills subs. A lot of times, people don't set their gains correctly, and especially when the amp is underpowering the subs, people have a tendency to crank up the gains (which can result in a clipped signal) or crank up the volume (which can bring in more distortion). So in many cases, an amp that is rated for less power than the subs can lead to blown subs.

That said, the Rs are known to handle a lot more clean power than they are rated at, BUT, unlike some other monster subs out there, they don't really need it to get them moving and LOUD. Still, it's always nice to have more power on tap than what you really need.

The most important thing is setting your gains correctly (with test tones and a DMM) and then leaving them alone. If those subs are rated at 500 watts RMS, you'd be fine with as little as 300 watts each, and you'd still be fine with 600 watts each, perhaps even more, as long as you're sending them a clean, unclipped signal. As for power handling, trust me - if you are pounding on them too hard for a significant period of time in a ported box, you'll be able to smell them if they get too hot. That's your cue to ease up on them and let them cool off before you cook the voice coil.

I gave my single Type R 1200 watts rms daily..

To the OP...please disregard post #2...it is a poor choice of an amplifier.

How much money are you wanting to spend?

if u are using dual 4ohms subs im using a cadence txa1000d it does 1000 rms@1ohm

Type R's are known for taking a lot of power, you can send then 1000W and they take nicely, but if you just want to give then the rated power Audioque AQ1200D is a great choise, really affordable amp and great quality. I benchtested mine and i get 1237W@1ohm and 13.8V.

You should buy your subs 4ohm DVC, that way you can wire the @1ohm, that way you'll get most from your amp.

Any opinions on a type-x?

as far as running a 15, its really not worth it. Youd get alot of bass but not as crisp as a 10 or 12. But i must say a buddy of mine had 1 15" L7 and it was insane, but quality is very important. Also keep in mind you can have a medioker sub with a nice amp and will be great... vise versa aint happenin. But it all comes down to, you want your roof to flex? Or you wanna please your ears?

there is no difference in "crispness" or "quickness" between different size subs...its all about the enclosure and install

My best friend has two Type X's and they sound decent...I say decent because he has them in a prefab enclosure.

With the right enclosure the Type X will sound good and get loud. Sound better than the Type R's but for output I'd say the Type R wins

X2, size dont have anything to do with those factors. I had 2 10", now i have 1 15", both to their job nice, and now i wont go back to smaller size i'll stick with just one 15".

Type X is a SQ sub, sound really nice and get loud, but the type R can be louder.
