I just installed my dash cam and have it plugged into the 12v lighter socket in the front forward covered console. I noticed that it is hot wired and won’t turn off with the engine so my camera stays on 24/7. Before I attempt to rewire everything, does anyone know if the one on the center armrest also stays on 24/7 or does that one turn off with the engine? Thanks!

Wish they'd make up their minds. It seem that every Explorer I've had is different. 2004 stayed on 24/7, my 2016 Platinum shut down with the key...for awhile...now it stays on...go figure. Ford dealer assured me that the 2016 shut off with the key but even after demonstrating that he was wrong he wouldn't believe me. The shop couldn't change it so now I have to be careful what I leave plugged in.

May want to look to see if your dash cam offers a hard wire kit. It is far better than a 12v plug.

I’m gonna check. I was proud of myself for completely concealing the wire but just checked the armrest one and that stays on 24/7 as well. Dammit!

Pretty sure it times out and shuts off after 20 min. There is a setting in forscan for the battery saver time out. People on the Superduty forum were changing it to max out at 3 or 4 hours (I think 3 was the max) due to wanting accessory power longer.

What's nice about the hardwire kits is they keep the camera in a parking mode when the engine is shut off so it can still monitor.. then it shuts off completely once your battery voltage hits a certain voltage (had mine set for 11.2v).

Although dash cams are great, I want mine to record when I'm gone too.. or if my vehicle gets hit while parked.

Even the Manual isn't very clear on this. Under "Power Points", it says when you turn the ignition ON, you can use the 12V power point. It goes on to say the if there is no power when the ignition is OFF, turn the ignition ON. This seems to indicate that they, or at least some, are not powered all the time.
