160 degree thermostate???

i have a 2000 mountaineer 5.0l. and i was wanting to know why at the auto store for stock mountaineer do they offer three different thermostats. 160, 180, 190??

i originally had the 190 but i put in a 160. is it gonna hurt anything??

yes your fuel economy, the 190 is the better choice

I never noticed a mpg diff.. iv had my 160 in for 6yrs n love it.. truck runs pretty cool on 90 deg days with the a/c blowing.. even towing my car trailer n jeep on 39's I hardly get to the r in normal..... only complaint is towing or driving long on the high way, temp only gets to the "line"... is rather run cooler then possible run hot...

It's not going to run "hot" with a 190 degree thermostat, that's the temperature the engine was designed to run at. By not allowing your engine to get up to proper operating temp, you are hurting performance and MPGs.

I'm with ya on that... but for my app, i was whelin alot,n towing about 6500lbs on 33's.. so for me my truck had abit of load on her.. not to mension a/c going... she got a bit hot at times.. even tho i have a 160 it doea mean its eunning at 160.. thru a laser thermometer I average 190 ish.. but I'm also tuned(advanced timing) for 93.. just my $0.02..

I have a 160 degree thermostat in my car. I run it with an electric fan that turns on at 180 degree. Certainly has it's advantages if you run under load, pull a lot of weight, or drive at WOT a lot. In older cars, overheating was an issue. One of the ways to correct that was to install a lower temperature thermostat. In my car, the engine sometimes stays on for hours on end, sitting at idle more than I'm moving. With the OEM 190 degree thermostat, it ran hot. I don't have that issue anymore.

As far as mileage goes, I can see the logic. The PCM sees a lower temp, then adds more fuel to run the engine up to temp. I have a K&N intake, so that extra fuel is taken advantage of by way of the extra air. Does this result in a little more power? Does it use more gas? I got bad mileage to begin with. Stop & go rush hour traffic, never accelerating beyond 20 MPH, and constant idling. I was lucky to see 10 - 12 MPG. But on the open road, at a conservative cruising speed where I lightly feather the throttle; I have seen over 20 MPG.
