you could put 17 inch wheels without a problem. you just have to make sure u get proper backspacing. i know of many poeple with 18 inch rims with no problem

Well, you may need to get the speedometer recalibrated at Ford, but other then that I would say your ok.

When you get the ties installed the shop should know what size youll need to keep your speedo reading correctly.

Tony,
The newer (95 and up) trucks have no gear for the speedo..they are all electronic. So I do not know if a shop could do that..i would go to ford.

17" wheels work

I have a set of 17" Enkei RS-6 wheels on my Explorer. I got Pirelli Scorpion Zeros in size 275/55. If you get the right size, you can get the same outside diameter, which means no need to correct your speedo. I believe that as long as the diameter is with in 0.1 to 0.2 inches it shouldn't make too much of a difference in speedo reading. My wheel/tire combo is only 0.1 inch larger and I can't see any difference. Also, make sure you get the right offset in your wheels. Some 17 inchers will have the tires rubbing on the front swaybar. Explorer Express has a set of spacers to eliminate this problem. They also sell 17" wheels.

speedo

well i am going to put 265/70s on the 17"s so the speedo will be a little off. the new tires will be approx. 31.8" in diameter. the factory tires are 255/70/16. well, if there is no way to fix it, i can live with it. but if anyone knows how to do this, please do tell.

docvijay,
did you have any trouble with the fipk on your 99? i know they are designed to fit the 95-95 models. do you think it would fit on a SOHC?

The FIPK actually fits the OHV perfectly, even though it's the "wrong" year. The only part that does not match up is the brace that hold the MAF and filter in place, but that is nothing. I temporarily rigged mine with some zip ties, and that held it in place fine for a while. I just got some steel braces (from Home Depot, strips of metal with row of holes down middle) and bent it into shape, and screwed it down. No problem.

I believe it should fir the SOHC also. The MAF should be the same. It bolts to the airbox with 4 bolts. Just unbolt it and remove the old airbox. The kit includes an aluminium ring that attaches to the MAF. The filter then clamps to this. Like I said, just figure out some way of holding the filter in place and you're good to go.
