I would love to hear the answer to this question on a 2000 mountaineer. I'm stuck between getting 255/60/17's or 275/60/17's. I know the rears will not rub but the fronts I'm worried about. Also mine are 17x9's

I had 255/60/17's on 96 Cobra wheels for the life of the tires, 32K. The handling was amazing, but the ride wasn't near as smooth as the stock 75 series tires.
I like the 60 series as a good compromise. I'd prefer to go with 265/60/17's if I were to use my 17x8 Cobra wheels again. The Kumho Ecsta STX's are supposed to be great tires. LOL,

I had 17x8 cobra wheels on my 93 with 275/60/17 Generals and no rub. I have 18x9's with 255/55/18's on my 96 lowered 1 1/2-2 inches with rub only at full lock turning.

For the 95-ups....

If you are lowered with the typical 17x9 whatevers with 6" of backspacing- the inside of the wheel lip will rub on the lower control arm at full steering lock, and the inside of the tire (if you run a 275/60) will slightly rub the sway bar also at full steering lock. If you are stock height, the rubbing isnt quit as bad. Basically, dont turn it all the way to lock. :)
