Year, Model & Trim Level
2018 Explorer XLT 3.5L V6
I've done many of my own brake jobs on Ford vehicles but the newer Explorer models seem to have numerous brake options for different trim levels. I have the 2018 Explorer XLT with a little over 50k. Replacing pads, rotors in front and rear as well as calipers & brackets in the rear. I had located replacement part numbers using my VIN on the raybestos website catalogue. There are sets of parts for the front and rear brakes that are noted "for XLT, Limited, etc". I ordered the items that were noted for XLT and not base model because the vehicle is an XLT.

Well today I went to install the brakes and to my surprise when mounting the new caliper bracket and placing pads up against the rotor in the bracket, the top of the pad sticks out past the rotor about 1/2"... Old caliper bracket and pads fit the new rotor just fine so the new caliper meant for the "XLT" trim seems to be taller. What I can't understand is that there is not a larger diameter rotor for the rear except for the dual layered/vented rotor (1/2" larger diameter) which Raybestos indicates this is for the 2-piston rear caliper, and I cannot find where these vehicles have a 2-piston rear caliper anywhere.... There are only two model calipers for the rear, base and XLT, both are single piston with integrated parking brake.

I know by looking at the pictures that the base model caliper will work with the single layer rotor, you can tell the bracket is not as tall. Does anyone here know if I can use that dual layer/vented rotor with the calipers I purchased or should I just battle the return of these calipers and get the ones with the appropriate bracket?

This doesn't seem to be just Raybestos, there seems to be several brands selling parts for XLT trim but will not fit my configuration. Just makes me wonder if ford sold the XLT trim with base level brakes on it? I appreciate any insight anyone can provide!

Welcome to the Forum.
It seems that these brake parts have caused other members problems as well. I don't know if this site would be any more helpful. I agree that there are very many options depending on the item you're looking for.
