What size engine do you have? Usually 195'F thermostat is OEM. Did you heat test the thermostat in water with a thermometer. Have you examined the thermostat closely to see if the center disk seals tightly when not at opening
temp.

4.0, i think some one may have put a 180 in it that's why it's reading so low. no i haven't removed it yet i was trying to get a bit of info before i went and did all that.

4.0L OHV or 4.0L SOHC?
When you decide to replace the thermostat don't use stealer type but Gates makes a good quality one. Make sure you also buy new thermostat gasket as well. Make sure you orintate the thermostat with the check valve at the top.
Bleed the system of air throughly using a new 50/50 ratio of good quality antifreeze to water. Some area's also require distilled water due to the poor quality of local municipal water supply. Also make sure you clean the overflow system and charge it with new mixture.

With a 180 degree thermostat installed the needle sits within the "normal" range,
but just barely above the first tick mark, and to the left of the "N" in normal.

The only problems with using a 180 degree thermostat, instead of the 195 degree standard one,
are, your gas mileage may be a bit lower and you may not get as much heat out of the heater.
