IMO 20's look better, but if you wanna race it 18's are best.

Go with 18's if you want to race your X.
Try some Cobra R's or Saleen wheels.

18's are usually lighter than 20's so that would help out in the speed department. There are plenty of members on here with both 18's and 20's that are lowered without any problems, me included. If you wanted, you good get a set of 15" racing rims (such as weld racing) with a set of drag radials to get some serious traction.:D

I thought tires are heavier than alloy. So normally an 18x9 with 275/55-18 would weigh more than, say, 20x9 with 275/40-20. You could forget about a 15x9 with meatier tires. That would weigh a lot more, no?

Alot of that depends on the rim also. Rims such as Weld's forged line are pretty light weight from what I understand. But yes, I do believe rubber is heavier than alloy. The weird thing though is that my 18X9 alloy rim with 255/55-18 weighs considerably more than my stock rims with 31X10.5-15. Enough that I noticed a gas mileage decrease.:( Oh well, the things we deal with for looks and performance.:D
