1989 Bronco II
Hi i new here sorry if i dont post this right but please just bear with me I have a 1989 Bronco II auto 4wd and from what ive been reading it has a A4lD Trans in i well i bought it yesterday and im trying to get it ready for plowing but the problem is the trans when in park it puts a load on the engine when i rev it when i put it into reverse it will act like its going into reverse and jerk but when i reve it it will just load the engine and not move at all it wont even coast backwards we had to pull it out of the driveway, now when i put it into nuetral it will go into drive along with Od Drive and 2 and will slip like hell but will run normal speed slipping all along butwhen i put it into 1st gear it wont move at all, The guy i bought it off of said supposively when his wife was driving it, she heard the sound of something dropping then it started slipping an had no reverse. Now when i brought it home after driving it for about 20 minutes it went into reverse once just fine then i tried it again and had to reve it up and it acted like a bad filter but now there is no reverse at all

Thanks hope someone can help me out

sounds a little like a problem that I encountered last week. turned out the tv (kick down) cable had popped off the tranny. things progressed to the slipping, etc.; limped home; the torque converter had been making weird noises for a while, so I ordered one and found the cable had come off when I put the Ex on the lift.

replaced the TC, adjusted the bands, put all the loose stuff back on and all is well. I have no idea what caused the cable to come off. I only drive on paved roads...?

thanks for getting back to me ill try adjusting the cable and checking the kick down lever then get back to you

well i just tried adjusting the cable and its right in where it needs to be and still no dice also the tv kickdown cable is in place, i put some lucas in it also and didnt help any

any other suggestions i hate to pull out the whole trans or play trial and error with changing parts if not im in the market for a trans

What year explorer trans should i look for since i heard they are stronger
should i worry about sensors being different, bellhousings output shafts

also would it be to much work to convert a 1993 ranger 2wd trans to 4wd since i can get one for next to nothing

My goal is to plow with it so heavier duty is better

Thanks Mike

The output shaft, snap ring, and extension housing are different between the 2WD & 4WD models. The 3.0L bell housing, check ball configuration, boost valve, and torque converter are different from the ones used with the 4.0L. 88-95 A4LD transmissions have 2 solenoids attached to the valve body.

thanks for the reply actually i just found a trans out of a 90 bronco ii that should be the same right?

thanks mike
