Hello everyone
I own a 1991 Explorer I accidently removed the speedo core and when I put it back in the first time the dang speedo needle went balistic just spinning and spinning what the **** is going on here I thought. well I pulled out the entire cable and regreased it with grease powder and I seated the cable core into the gear before I bolted the VSS and cable back to the trans case just to make sure it was engaged I thought for sure this would fix the problem but the needle still spins do I need an excorsist or what  , then again I removed the guage and took notice that underneath the needle there was some gold wire that seemed to be coiled and it seemed to be all twisted up as if the coil was unwound could it be that the guage needle went bad from it spinning to long prior to me disengaing it ? or is there a chance I did something else wrong when installing the cable?

I'm not understanding what happened?

At first I thought you disconnected the speedo cable, and had the core come out.

Later, it sounds like you had the speedo needle disconnected...

The first one should do anything bad, but removing the needle and driving I "think" can hurt the speedometer itself because w/out the needle, there is no weight and the speedometer will turn farther than it is supposed to.

yap that's what happened alright, when I first removed the gauge I had accidently broken the little black thing that stops the needle from over spinning thus causing the eratic behavior and eventaully the overspin caused the little coil underneath the needle to tangle up and break. I went to the salvage yard the next day and bought the entire cluster for only $58 dollars a worthy investment, I replaced the cluster and that resolved the problem Thanks for the suggestions .

I think i have a similar problem here but im not sure, so if anyone can help me please let me know. I removed the gauge cluster to install another from junkyard thinking this would fix the fluttering of the speedo but it was worse than my original one. So i put the original back in and no its all over the place reading 10-15 miles over the actual speed, which it didnt do untill i pulled it out. Its a 5speed manual so i can tell my engine sound about how fast it is going. If anyone has any idea what this could be please let me know, send me a pm if possible. Thanks
