After a search, I have not found the information I was looking for.

My 1991 XL with 148k has had some issues with the 4wd working. It's really slow to engage and you sometimes have to hit the button several times. I know this is a common issue with the motor to engage it. But, when it says it's engaged in 4wd, the front tires seem like they're not spinning at all. At first I thought it might have been the autohubs going out, but I tried 4 low and it seemed to work perfectly. Is there any reason why my 4 low works fine and my 4 hi doesn't work at all?

TIA

Jason

Question: If you go from LO back to High does it seem OK?
It could be the Dopey Transfer Case Motor isn't fully engaging until it reaches all the way over to Low range.

When switched from 4low to 4high it still did not engage the front wheels. 4low still works perfectly, it's just my high range isn't engaging the front driveshaft.

You should confirm by jacking up the your truck or spinning out in the mud.
