Can anyone tell me if a trans from a 1996 4.0 explorer is the same as my 1992's trans? Are all of the 4.0's the same regardless of year or are there differences?
Also I find a lot of 1st gen explorers seem to have burnt transmissions. Is this a common problem? If so, why and what can I do to prevent it from happening when I find a replacement trans for my explorer?

Thanks in advance

A 96 won't have the same transmission as your 92. The second gens came with a 4R55E or 4R70W while the first gens used a A4LD.

On the subject of the A4LD.....it was a pretty craptastic transmission and it's fairly common for them to fail for any number of reasons. Unless you get a newly rebuilt unit, any used A4LD is essentially a time bomb, but if you add an auxiliary transmission cooler then you can help keep it alive a fair bit longer.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. Thats exactly what I needed to know. Now the hunt for a rebuilt one is on.
