Hey people. I have a question that I hope will save me a bunch of possible useless labor. My 1996 Explorer has the 4.0l OHV auto with 4x4 and the trans has crapped out and will not go into any gear. My question is I have two other vehicles both with 4x4 and I want to know if the transmission will work from either one of them. One is a 1991 Explorer 4.0l OHV auto with 4x4 and the other is a 2000 Ranger with the 3.0l auto with 4x4. I know the transmission on the 91 is a different type but I haven't found for sure if it would work or not. I'm also pretty sure the 3.0 Ranger and the 96 4.0 Explorer have different bell housings but will that change? I think the Ranger may be a 4R44E or 4R55E like the Explorer. I really want to avoid the labor of pulling the transmissions only to find out they wont interchange.

The 4R44E is weaker and the A4LD isn't worth the hassle. Best to get another 96 4.0 trans, or rebuild what you got. Have you thought about a manual transmission conversion?

you may be able to use the 4r55e from the 2000 3.0 ranger into the 96 by changing the bellhousing and converter but I am not 100% sure!

I would rather see you get your current 96 auto completely remanufacture for consider a 5 speed swap
Best bet would be to use a 5r55e In your 96 from a later model truck like say a 2006-11 ranger but that would also require a little fiddling using some of the sensors from your 96 unit. I have used a 06 trans in a 98 before not as far back as 96

Those are the things I would look into if it was my beloved 96
