Well, I still have my 1992 Explorer, 4.0 V6, auto, with a new tranny from Certified Trasmission we put in last summer, now we have some problems, I would like fixed...

1. Heater makes a reallllllyyy loud roaring noise when on, gets louder as it blows harder, still doesnt blow all that hard, but it's warm.

2.Sometime while driving, I will be doing 1-75mph on a street or highway, the damn thing cuts out, like it wants to die, then drives fine, does this often, but still goes fine...wtf? I dont know...it just feels like it drops in neutral with nothing happening..but kicks back in 2 sec later...irratting...

Now...I am off to replace my window motor bushings...to everyone who replies, Thanks for the help! :salute:

I assume the heater noise is a worn out blower motor. The trans revs up like its in neutral, or just looses power? If it's revving up like in neutral you'll probably have to drop the pan at best. What to do after I have no idea, but I'm sure someone else here can help you with that. :)

If its dropping in Neutral, then could be low fluid, torque converter going bad. When you say it seems like it drops in Neutral where are the RPM's when that happens?

It's a hard problem to watch for, you kinda get thrown off guard when it happens, I hate our damn transmissions, I am checking today to see if it's the fluid...hopefully...we'll see though...

Ok, took a look, and went to check the ATF fluid..hmmm the dipstick and the holder completly came out,
(possibly leaking from the hole on the tranny where it goes in?)

..seems like someone messed that up, upon further investigation, I also found one of the bolts holding the tranny to the motor was almost completly out...

Could either one of these be the culprit?

Did you push the tube back in to get a fluid level? A loose bolt wouldn't cause a false neutral.

if the rpms drop when it cuts out it could be your fuel pump, happened to my 91' not to long ago

Thats why I asked what the RPM's were at when it happened. But as asked, did you try placing the tube back in place and seeing what the dipstick reads? If the tube was loose I believe that the fluid could have leaked out, is there any grease or film on the front of the tranny like fluid may have leaked?

hmm next time it happens make sure you look at the Tac cause it could be the fuel pump.

Next time it happens, I will look, whats a fuel pump run? Whats the cheapest spot to get one? My gas guage also doesnt work, so I am assuming the pump is in the tank as well? So could I just replace it all at once?

Yeah, the pump is in the tank also. Don't know what they run, check Napa or Advance Auto.

Alright, I am also going to assume the bolts are going to be ruusty as hell, does anyone know about how long this outta take to drop swap, and install?

I haven't personally done it, but I would suggest you get "PB Blaster"

whem i replaced mine i had a pro do it for 400 bucks regreted paying that much could have done it myself, my gas gauge was broken to when the fuel pump went out so maybe thats a precurser to a bad fuel pump? you could try a junk yard thats always a good way to go for cheap parts.

There shouldn't be a correlation between the fuel pump, and a non-working gas gauge. Dropping the tank on an Explorer isn't that difficult. Should be easily done in a few hours. You may want to consider replacing the straps if they are badly rusted, then they can just be cut to drop the tank.

the fuel gauge sensor and the fuel pump are one unit so maybe thats why it did it or it could just be a coincidense
