92 Eddie Bauer 4X4
My daughter and her husband had a one owner, 1992, Explorer Eddie Bauer edition, 4X4 :exp:that they were going to sell. I bought it for $1.00 and decided to fix the small, irritating, things an 18 year old car can accumulate. Everything was easy until I tried to get the radio to work. It appeared as if the power was disconnected except turning on the headlights would also turn on the dash lights in the radio. I was unable to find anyone local to test the radio so off I go to Pick-a-part and bought an OEM AM/FM-tape-deck and plugged it in. No Joy! I read some where that when the radio was removed or a new battery was installed, the radio must have a "code" renewed in order to work. Can anyone tell me about this? Thanks guys.:salute:

I'm a retired EE (Electrical Engineer) I checked all fuses with a VOM and volt meter before trying this forum. I have 12+ volts at the correct plug wires Yel/Blk and LtGrn/Yel. After checking the wiring diagrams, I discovered there are SPLICES shown in the two ground wires (new from the factory!!!!!). I'll check those tomorrow when there is a little more light. At 76 the eyes are not as good as they used to be. Still I managed to replace four shocks, the accelerator cable and trouble shoot this #$@* FORD (Fix Or Repair Daily is what we used to say Ford stood for <GRIN>) so I still have a little vinegar in me. Think I'll go have a beer until tomorrow.

Just for a quick update to this, I've successfully answered my own question. The power, grounds, and speaker wiring are all good. The Radio is Kaput! Now to find a replacement. Stay tuned if interested.

There also is no code, I believe that is for newer units overseas for the anti-theft features...

After much research, I settled on a Boss 638UA In-Dash CD/MP3 Receiver with Front Panel AUX Input & USB, from Amazon, for $73.26 delivered. It has four outputs at 60 watts each. That should allow for any losses due to old wiring connections and will also allow me to record mpg's on a memory stick for playing. I'll wait until it arrives and find out which/what adapter connectors I need to connect to the existing wiring so I can retain the current speaker system. I'll take pictures and describe what I do so the next guy has a road map to replace his. Since my EB Explorer has the JBL Premium system, it may not be easy.
