Hi everyone, I recently bought a 92 ranger 4x4 with electric shift It usually doesn't engage when button is pressed. when it does engage it makes a lot of clunking noise. I was wondering if the clunking could be from the electric motor not fully engaging? Any advice would be appreciated!
If it wasn't fully engaging it would make a lot of buzzing or clunking. Pull off the shift motor and engage 4x4 by hand to see if it's an internal case problem or the motor. Read through the sticky above this thread for the 1354 shifter motor rebuild thread, your 1350 is pretty much the same thing.
I tried to rebuild the motor but had no luck. I bought a rebuilt motor for $72 and it works fine in 4 high now but not in low range. Maybe a problem with switch.

I thought only 4.0's had the 1354, while the smaller engines still had the 1350? But I don't own a ranger, what would I know, lol, either way they are pretty much the exact same case.
