HI
I have a 1992 xlt, and I keep hearing a electrical whine by the gas tank or close to it. Whould this be the fuel pump fixing to go out?

I've had that same high pitched whine for a while now. Hope it's not the fuel pump going out!! Mine's done this for well over a year now as far as I know since I've had it, hasn't gotten worse or better. My power steering pump also wines.

noise from the fuel pump

Thanks for your input.from my searches in the forum it sounds like a common thing, and not to worry about

That is a normal sound for the fuel pump, but it seems you already figured that out. Some fuel pumps are high pitched, some are more of a low rumble (like mine)

I don't know of any high pressure EFI fuel pumps that run silently. Some pumps are louder than others. It would be normal to hear some noise from the fuel pump. Excessive noise could possibly indicate a pump getting ready to fail, but how do you define excessive noise? How long have you had the truck? Is the noise "new"? Is it consistent? How does it compare to other '92 Explorers/Rangers? What does the fuel pressure look like? It's been a long time since I've seen those threads, but a user named Opera House used to post frequently about putting an ammeter into the fuel pump circuit and measuring the current draw of the fuel pump. If the current draw were excessive, that could be an indication of the pump condition.

thankyou also CLOAK . I beleave I will find this site usefull. My 92 is starting to show her age, So I will be able to find some fixes or usefull insite

Hi I have had the vehicle for 5 years, and the noise is a hi pitch whine. I am lucky to hear it, as my ears whine too. But the better half says it is recent. What does the fuel pressure look like? Do not know will have to have mech check it for me.
