Hello all,
I have a 93' Astar which I have had now thankfully for 3 trouble free years,
with only minor repairs. It now has 221K on the clock and ever since I
bought it with 176K it has always had a slight jitter to it, not a concern
to speak of but recently it has gotten a little more shaky, but mostly
when I first start it. It usually calms down to normal when it comes off
high COLD idle. It has always used a small amount of coolant over the
years, I would say I have added about 2 Gal. over a 3 yr. period, and
it uses a quart of oil a week as well. Never over heated, and temp
needle sits on the "N" of normal at opt. temp. goes up to the"O" if
i'm running around in the mnts. No indication of coolant in oil or white
exhaust, very strange. Checked it over recently and there is some
coolant in the area of top hose to stat housing, may be around
water pump housing but hard to tell. SOOOOOOOOO what would
cause coolant usage over that time with out over heating and no
visible leakage on the ground under the van? Other than that it runs
pretty good, been very reliable. I just get the feeling like my luck
might be running out. I am putting information together recently to
find out some repair options, getting something else, used motor,
ect. If it comes down to repair I think I will go for it, seeing how
reliable it has been, I cant replace it for what it would cost in
repairs, plus I have grown to like it over the yrs. even if it looks
like an Aardvark or a dust buster without the handle. Thanks for
any input you all might provide.:) P.S. it is the 3.0L V6

to be sure check everywhere with a focus flashlight but it could be anywhere i would also check intake manifold gasket in the rear but find it before it really cost you a fortune or right beside the thermostat housing

Welcome to this forum! I've renamed your thread, and moved it into the Aerostar section. Connect a cooling system pressure tester onto the radiator to find the source of the coolant leak. A slow leak might not be obvious without using this kind of tester. Do you see oil all over the bottom of the van? You definitely have an oil leak.

Pressure check the cooling system. A possible coolant leak that don't really show up as dripping coolant is the engine freeze plugs. Could be the thermostat hose clamp/hose/housing gasket.

I have had two Aerostars that had a slow coolant leak like you discribe and both times it was the engine freeze plugs. Unfortunately that's the start. If you havent replaced any coolant system parts other things will probably start failing.

One part on both of my Aerostars that keeps on going is the engine. It's all the other stuff around the engine that has gone bad over the years.

As far as the stuttering you mention when you first start driving I would suggest the ignition coil, spark plug wires and plugs.

Good luck-Scott (14 years as an Aerostar owner)
