93 aerostar transmission wont engage

thnk u for the welcome and for the response as well. the fluid level appears fine and the shifter arm is snug as should be. however i m not familiar with the z-link . at least not by that name. i m questioning the compatability of the motor/trans being as the replacement came from 94 3.8 litre aerostar and i suspect that my efforts are simply an excercise in 'spinning my wheels'. (self ridicule intended)!

The Aerostar came with a 3.0L or a 4.0L in that year. I suggest that you take a look at two sticky threads in the transmission section on the A4LD transmission. One is the main rebuilding thread, and the other is the valve body rebuilding thread.

Are the levers on the outside of the transmission the same? I think 3.0 and 4.0 used different levers. Wrong levers = Incorrect or no shifting. Levers can be swapped.

Speedo sensor is on rear end housing.

are you sure you have the torque converter all the way in? it turns the pump.
I had to add 9 quarts of fluid when I replaced mine.
how many did you add?
