Hello all, I searched in the past topics and I couldn't find a thread on this.
I have a 1993 Eddie Bauer Explorer and the drivers side door sags when it is opened which causes it to be pretty hard to shut. The upper hinge pin and bushings are certainly worn out. I saw this listing on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=418&item=2242893004&rd=1

I have read many posts stating that changing the entire upper hinge is a real pain because alot of the dash has to be removed. I figured I would try just replacing the pin. Here is the delema. This Ebay item lists that it will fit
Ford Ranger, Explorer, F-150, F-250 and F-350. Model years 1980 - 1998
I can't see how that is possible because I went to Autozone and they had the hinge pins and bushings for the F-150 series and they were much longer in length and much fatter in diameter than the ones on my Explorer. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. It is getting pretty hard to close my door and I really need to fix it. Should I replace the entire hinge? Is it as difficult as they say it is? Thanks!!

Go to Autozone, A mistake will only cost you $3. I've done a couple of these. First time, I actually bought the upper hinge. Then I figured out what I would have to do. Actually ground the rivet off and drilled/tapped the end of the pin. Used the new door side and the old section on the frame.

The help pins are longer and it is optional if you cut them down. Tapping and putting a bolt in it snugs up the hinge. A lot of work that doesn't make much difference.

I went to Auto Zone. According to the HELP book, they only offered the roller and pin assembly for the lower hinge (the little pin). They did not offer an upper pin and bushing set. The hinge pin sets they did have were all much longer and much thicker than what is on my Explorer. I wouldn't have a problem cutting it shorter but 2 problems would arise. 1. it is still way to thick in diameter. 2. How would I get it to stay in. The hinge pins they had were held in place with a c-clip. If I cut the pin to the correct length the groove that the c-clip fits into would be gone.

That must have been my problem, I never looked in a book. Just got out my calipers and measured things. Unless you waited far too long, the pins are not that worn and could be reused. Bushings take most of the wear. The top edge of the pin is splined and pressed into the hinge. Requires a little effort to drive it out. Replacement pins aren't pressed in. Replacing just the pins requires some mechanical skills and ability to adapt.

The ebay kit certainly isn't cheap, but not bad if it fits. Didn't see any complaints.

What do you think about the Ebay item I show in my initial thread? Does it look like the correct pin. It does to me. thanks..

I bought the hinge pin kit that was listed. It came to $13.13 which is a little pricey for 1 hinge pin and bushings but if it works it will be great. The seller emailed me back and told me that it will fit. I will post results on how the installation went as soon as I get it. Thanks....

I have purchased and used the hinge pin kits from autozone on both front doors of my '92 with no problem. I don't remember what the part # was but I know it was listed in the book, I didnt do any measuring.

Autozone no longer stocks the hinge pin kit in their cross reference book. They only list the roller and pin assembly for the lower hinge. I asked if they could order it and they said no. Which hinge kit did you buy? They had many of them there but they all looked like they wer too long and the diameter way too thick. I bought the one that was up on ebay. It looks correct. Hopefully...

Well, I received the hinge pin and bushing. It was the same one that AutoZone has listed and stocked for the F150. I bought it on Ebay and got ripped for $9.99 +3.13 for shipping. It came US mail for .60 so I got hammered on the shipping charge. I also paid double what autozone charges. Oh well.. live and learn. Anyway, I grinded off the top of the original pin with my Dremel and knocked it out from the top. I then removed the door side of the hinge and popped the old bearings out. The new bearings and the pin installed perfectly and I reinstalled everything. I did the entire job with no help in 35 minutes and it came out mint.
