I have a high idle and low power problem on this 1993 ford ranger 4.0L OHV (non Cal emission)
I have read for two months here and every forums out there and haven't yet found my trouble
Here's where I'm at. I had a mechanic do a scan with a snapon and found a 411 & 412 DTC. I replaced the IAC, TPS, MAF. I did myself a vacuum test and he did also and found none.
It idles correct after KAM dump but trains about 1000 to 1100 and while doing 60 and kicking it in neutral, it's 1500 so I power brake coming down hill
I already checked the mechanical stop and throttle body and all is free and clear
It has good compression and uses no oil
It's an automatic and get's around 12mpg which sucks
I do live near a mountain pass that is about 5.5% in places, and the a4ld hunts 4 -3 all the way up (about 6 miles) so I shift to D and it hunts 3 -2
at about 50mph
I also replaced the plugs twice with different brands and I believe I have NGK,s in it now, also new plug wires
This Mech called a Ford Mech and he thinks it may be a timing issue
I have basically been a mechanic all my life and do electronics and do understand schematics etc. (I'm 73 and not new at this)
I would like to check the timing myself but through all my eye bleeding I can't find the procedure to do so. The Mech told me he needed a CAM positioning tool and wasn't about to buy one then I read that this motor doesn't use one.
I have a good timing light an OBDI reader, tools etc.
Can anyone tell me the right procedure to just check it, or set it on this engine.
I have a little problem squirming around under a rig but if there is a mark and pointer around the damper, Ill find it.
Buy the way, what does this have a CAM, CKP, distributor or just a turnie thing
I have a Haynes coming but I don't have much faith in them. It will probably show the Model T and I already know how to work on those
