My 4wd wouldnt engage but the lights worked for hi and low range. When I get underneath the front drive shaft would lock when turned by hand. I wanted to see if the hubs where the problem.

I put the car on stands placed it in 4x4 hi and put it in drive no front action.

Put the car back on the ground pulled the wheels and hub covers and I find everything coated in a thick grease. I cleaned off the old grease and soaked everythig including the hub cover in ATF.

I put everything back together and put it in 4x4 hoping that cleaning the grease would help. The light on the dash wont go out and it wont go into 4x4 low even though it used to before I cleaned the hubs.

I got underneath and pulled the connector to the shifter mechanism and cleaned it and reconnected, still nothing.

My current state is the dash light says 4x4 and when I get underneath and spin the front drive shaft the passenger side spins with the front shaft where it enters the brake rotor, the drivers side will only spin if I turn the shaft very slowly or in reverse it seems to grab for a turn or two and the stop.

Whats my next option replace the shifter motor for the transfer case and new manual hubs?

Try doing a search. This and/or similar problems have been discussed several times in the past. The solution is to remove the t-case motor and manually engage the t-case then use a jumper to run the motor. There is a more detailed description on how to do this in the database, you'll just have to look for it.

When you did this, was the front driveshaft spinning? If it was, then there is a "disconnect" in the auto-hubs (time to switch to manual hubs). If the driveshaft wasnt spinning, the transfer case is at fault.
