1994 XLT
Hi,
I have a 1994 XLT that last week started acting wierd. I took it in and had the tranny fluid flushed, but this didnt help. I have no idea if they replace the filter. I would assume they do.

Here are the symtoms. I push on gas, it goes, but then it doesnt want to shift to the next gear. Some times it will if you keep going faster, some times it will only after letting off the gas. The problem goes away when it has been running for about 10 minutes.

It almost got me killed today. I was turning into a parking lot, and it didnt want to shift down to first to take me into it. It stalled and finally caught, and took me in. I almost got creamed by another car. Scared the crap out of me.

Any help? Is it just something out of adjustment? The explorer has 188k on it. It has been flawless untill this.

At first it sounded like a sticky governor. There are a a few threads on cleaning it.. including pictures of it in the a4ld rebuild diary..

But, you said it didn't shift down.. a sticky governor will keep it from going from 1 to 2. I'm not sure about the symptom you described.. but to me, it sounds like valve body problems.. I'm sure someone else will chime in with more info..

Well you can't assume anything. Some places won't change the filter unless you specifically tell them to.

It does sound like the sticky governor as was said. Keep in mind that if you get air leakage around the o-rings that fit around the filter, you can also get weird shifting behavior. Since yours goes away once the transmission is warmed up, a sticky gov seems very possible...

Still not sure

I agree with the stuck governor. I have some questions on the fix.

I have to remove the transfer case? One post says that, the other says something else. That seems like more then I might be cabable of. I have never had to do something under the car.

I have replaced motors, and such, but never anything in the tranny.

I guess I just need more encourgement.

Focker Out!!

If your 4x4 you have an xfer case that must be removed to get to the governor. If your not 4x4, no xfer case to remove (but I believe you still remove stuff.. just different stuff).

It not that hard to do, BUT if someone used a bunch of RTV ("rightstuff" in my case) between the trans and the xfer case it will be real pain in the rear to get the xfercase to let go of the transmission.

Other than that, it wasn't hard to do..

Does the gov effect a 3-4 shift? My 3-4 shift sometime is fine, others it sometimes stays in 3rd & will only shift into 4th if I stab the gas. And only at speeds up in the 50mph range. If I gun it from a stop each gears works fine. Or is this something different like a kickdown, or shift cable?

3-4 shift is controlled by a electronic shift solenoid and commanded by the onboard computer (PCM). Some versions of this solenoid used a screen and if the screen becomes obstructed (gunked up) it can cause the problems you describe, perfectly.
