1994 Ford Ranger problems.

I have a 1994 Ford Ranger extended cab, 4x4, 4.0 L, 4 speed automatic. I have a problem with the transmission fluid getting mixed with the oil in the crank case. I noticed my transmission fluid getting low a few weeks ago and had to add a little every couple weeks. I noticed the other day that my exhaust was blowing black smoke. I checked the oil and found the level was way over the full mark. I immediatly drained all the oil out of the crank case and had a couple extra quarts of oil than I should have. I checked the radiator and all other fluids in the truck and the only thing that seems to be going down is the transmission fluid. I proceeded putting on a new oil filter and put fresh oil in to keep an eye on it in the next week. Can anybody explain why this would happen or how it would happen? Does anyone have any schematics or diagrams that show how the oil would be able to get in the crank case? Is this possible? I love this truck so much and would really love to be able to fix the problem. I am really stumped on this one and could really use the help. Thank you so much.

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the Ranger section. It sounds like your vacuum modulator is leaking.

According to the shop manual there's a vacuum modulator on the trans. If the internal diaphragm is cracked the fluid will get sucked up into the engine. Its supposed to be on the passenger's side of the trans towards the back with a couple vacuum lines going to it. Pull off a vacuum line and see if there's fluid there. If there is you need to replace the modulator. Why its there on an electronically shifted trans is beyond me, but the shop manual shows it "on some models".
