I just recently bought a 1994 ranger 4cyl.

The a/c compressor does not kick on when I press the a/c button (The light lights up though).

I ran 12 volts to the compressor and it does spin. I did some research and changed the WOT relay, still no luck.

I pulled out the WOT relay and put 12 volts to the center/right pin in the fuse box (under WOT relay) and the compressor kicks on.

I tried switching with a working relay and still no luck.

I have done a lot of searching and I have found every thread saying something else (Bad PCM, low freon, bad WOT connector, etc)

Does anyone know a way to fix this? Its getting hot and really makes it hard to stay cool in the little single cab.

Is there a way to just run 12 volts to the compressor with a toggle switch in between to manually control the a/c, or is this dangerous?

Thanks,
Austin

Have you checked the Freon? If it is low, you can manually activate the compressor but you will still get little or no cooling from the A/C. If it is also low on oil, you could damage the bearings in the compressor.

There could be other reasons the A/C is not working but checking the Freon is usually the first place to start. Low Freon can cause the A/C compressor to not kick in. I am not sure that is true of your A/C system but most later style A/Cs work that way.

I'm having a very similar issue with mine. No blown fuses, and relays are good but my system is completely dry. However, jumping the pins on the pressure cutoff connector did not activate the clutch. The clutch will engage when it's jumped manually though. Tonight I am going to evacuate the system with my vacuum pump and recharge it with r134. If it doesn't run after that I will be go through the electrical one wire at a time until I find the fault.

I would check the pressure first like redfx4 mentioned. If it's low you might get away with just adding some refrigerant but if it's empty you'll want to pull vacuum on it to get the all moisture and atmosphere out before charging.
