just got the tranny rebuilt in my '95 XLT. it had sat up for about a year with a broken intermediate band. I would crank it about once a month & drive it around the yard a little. other than that it just sat there. I had used the 4wd about 5 months ago to get my brothers truck unstuck from my yard & it worked fine. I got it back from the shop yesterday & now it doesnt want to work right. it engages 4wd auto normally but has a very long delay going into low range. also, it acts like it slips in & out of 4wd when I turn the wheel. it does this in auto or low. trying to determine if the shop might have not connected everything back up right or if tis just from sitting up. I came home from the tranny shop & went straight to the tire shop for some new tires before I checked the 4wd. could either place have done something wrong to cause this? never had any problems with the 4wd before but like I said it had sat without being used for several months. any help is appreciated.

It's probably just because it has been sitting. The shift motor for the 4x4LOW likes to be exercised. If it is not used for a while it will act up a little. The shift motor is only used for the 4x4LOW shift on a '95. Just put it in 4x4LOW once a week and it should be fine. As for the front wheels. That is normal for them. Don't use 4x4 on dry pavement or back to the tranny shop you will go.

it doesn't hurt having 4X4 Auto engaged all the time really, thats more a safety thing you can do for yourself, because the 4X4 isn't really engaged til the wheels slip. Its like 97-01 Auto position, it Shouldn't hurt it.

thanks for the replies. I have used the 4wd in this truck alot & the slipping feeling I described when the wheels turn isnt normal for this truck. it feels like the axles are binding up & then they slip out of 4wd. I have a 1 acre dirt lot I have been driving it around & will continue to try to free things up a few more times.

yeah whenever you feel binding of any kind, that's when you REALLY want to have a close look at everything under the truck. i drove around with a binding while turning issue in my first gen, which turned out to be a broken radius arm, but i couldn't see it because the break was under my bumpstop pad....
