1995 Explorer 4wd speedometer not working OD light flashing

Based on other threads I replaced the VSS sensor. While cleaning the area before putting the new sensor in, I noticed that I can spin the gear that is inside the transfer case. I am wondering if this might be my issue? I would think it should not spin freely. Any one know about this?

Test the speed sensor with a drill, sometimes you can chuck up the gear or the cable end and spin it, if the speedo moves you will know the problem it in the T case. The gear in the T case shouldn't spin on the shaft, it needs to be tight to drive the sensor gear.

Yes you should not be able to spin the drive gear inside the t case tail housing at all it should be fixed to the output shaft.

You can open the back half of your transfer case and see what happened
