1992 Explorer 4dr 4x4 XLT
So my brother keeps tagging me in an Explorer ad on facebook.
a 1995 Ford Explorer XLT , 4x4, 5-spd manual.
It is $200

However it has a "blown headgasket"
Now i havea 92 that i did a motor install in but i think the tranny and rear main seal may be going.
I dont mind spending my time doing the labor. But do you think it would be worth it?

1995, Manual, 300,00kms, $200 Cad.
What do you think?

If your handy enough to change the gaskets I would. I'm have a dumb addiction to these old SUVs tho.

I think they have upgraded heads on eBay for 300-350$ so your looking at 500$ if you do the work yourself.

303,000 km is 188,000 miles. $200 cad is $148 usd and for that price you could sell the transmission out of it and scrap the entire thing to make a profit if it can't be fixed.

If you can spare the money and if you have the room, why not get it, I say. From the pics and description, it’s easily worth it.
Get it, and then decide what to do with it.

If it were me, I'd go after it in a heartbeat. imp

Ive never seen a 4dr manual 4x4 before! That is cool. Being a northern vehicle, make sure not too much frame and body rust. Also, if it has a blown head gasket and has been sitting a long time with water in the cylinder/s.?....bad...... might just need another good engine installed. For a DIY'er, it is a great seal sill!

Agreed. I can't buy a single new tire for my rigs at that price.

The manual ECM, Engine & trans harness alone would make your money back to the right person in need. Now add that Manual trans with everything (kit) it takes to swap an auto over, 5 times your money.

That short 2nd gen console isn't easy to find either. That's worth 1/3 or more of the selling price alone.

So even if you can't save this rig for yourself, at least you can help others........ save theirs.

My parents had a '91 manual. I liked the manual 4x4. By the looks of it I would buy it for $200 even if it did need some work. Parts are not too expensive, easy to get and it's not hard to work on. Or keep the parts you need and sell the rest.

fiddlesticks, someone offered $700 right before i arrived >_<

get a used motor, do the chains, put said used motor in that EX --put a new clutch and cover in too enjoy the hell out of it

The '95 V6 engine is not a SOHC it's an OHV engine, so timing chains are not an issue.

As far as the head gaskets, once the heads are off have them checked for cracks and if ok have them resurfaced. Very common problem with OHV 4.0L engine. So it's fairly likely you may need new heads. This isn't that big of a deal and other than the head problem the OHV 4.0L is a very bullet proof engine. (300,000 miles + is not uncommon).

That trucks looks clean for a '95, for $200 you can't go too far wrong as long as you can do the work yourself. Figure there will be other issues with a 24 year old vehicle, but hopefully they'll be minor. It's a crap shoot. Sometimes you win, sometimes you loose.

How long has it been sitting?

I personally prefer an auto for off roading.....for those scenarios, granted somewhat rare, like struggling/not making it up a hill....already stressful but then with manual having to double-foot it...quickly put in clutch so engine doesn't die and brake and swing way over to reverse as your vehicle is starting to slide backwards down hill....no thanks.

It's no fun if your not sucking holes in the seat.
