Hello,I have a 1995 ford explorer xlt.It has the 4405 tcase. And I was wondering if it could be switched to a manual tcase? For the reason that I can not get the auto shift to work. Thanks for any info!!!:D

Yes, it can, but it's not exactly plug and play. A 13-54 out of a first-gen will work, but it functions entirely different. Many people here have done the swap (in fact, I think it's a sticky thread in this section).

Search a bit and you'll find it...

Like Joe said. Its pretty a pretty easy swap. If you are set in the 1354 which is a better setup in my opinion then go for it. If you are unsure of sending the money of your ability to do this, you may want to try and clean or replace the shift motor first.

If you do decide to do the swap it would be best to find a junkyard explorer that you can grab all the parts you need. This would include the Transfer case, shifter assembly, including the shifter lever ,the 2 bolts that mount it to the transmission housing and the interrior trim pieces. You may also want to try and get the transmission inspection plate. This will make it so that you do not need to cut a hole in your floor and you will only have to swap plates. You will still need to do cut the carpet, but thats pretty easy to do. Remember the more parts you can get from the donor Ex the easier and less expesive this will be.

The swap of the case itself is as easy as removing the old one and installing the new one. You will not have to modify driveshafts or anything. The hardest part is getting the shifter through the floor.

Good luck!

Except that the shift motor has nothing to do with the transfer case locking on a 95...

He'd also need to deal with the center axle disconnect on the passenger side of the front axle. Without using the original controls, it'll need to be forced into the locking position.

Troubleshooting the existing system is easy. There's a sticky at the top of the forums for it. (IIRC, I called it '2nd gen 4wd not working? Start here')

Wouldn't attempting the BWM help him diagnose it? (i love the bwm)

Depends exactly what it's doing (or not doing, as the case may be).

How does the shift motor have nothing to do with it locking? How else will the case be shifted? Does it ever shift? Can you get 4 Low out of it?

Darn it, I keep forgetting about the CAD in the 95 and 96 now that I went to a Dana 44. Its easy to lock it or to get a shaft from a newer Explorer. I feel that for serious offroad use when you want to know that you will have 4wd when you want it, that vaccuume disconnect thing is just asking for trouble.

The shift motor shifts it into 4wheel gear but the 4wd is engaged with that electromagentic clutch coil

The reason I ask about the manual swap.Is that I have changed the shift motor, relays, gem, hall sensors, speed sensor, new 4wd switch on dash, and also put new fluid in the tcase. It has been in 2 different shops. One shop read the codes and said it was the gem.But 2 different gems and still know luck.I pulled the shift motor of and flipped the switch to auto 4wd and the motor did not do anything.

Did you try searching? I know there's been people that's done it and talked bout it. I think but not sure if you have the CAD or not I think the sports were live axles but not sure, if you have the CAD you'll have to look over the thread JDraper wrote up on how to manually control that.
