1995 Ford Explorer Check Engine Light

I've had that 214 for over a year. Sometimes I need to hold an extra second to turn the Ex over, but it runs great.

I've tried for a year also- to get someone to tell me what risk I am putting my truck in by not replacing it. Unfortunately, either nobody really knows, or they haven't seen the questions. I'd love to know if I'm potentially hurting my truck, because I can't spend 1/3 of what I paid for the truck on a sensor- that just makes me dizzy! :)

I took mine Autozone and had the codes read, they gave me a printout on possible causes for the problem. you can go to their website and get that info there if you know what your codes are.

after much search (and most thorough) I found rebuilt 1995 camshaft synchronizers for about $350.00 at Collectors Auto Supply (800 414 4462) which seems kind of high for a rebuilt one. Haven't called them yet. Wish there was a way to block out the check engine light (which is really annoying). May try some electrical tape on the glass....

If you're running a '95, you can check your codes with a paperclip or a short piece of wire for free wherever/whenever you like...

If you don't want to fix the issue, pull the cluster and remove the bulb. Did that on an old car with an ECU problem. :D

Maybe try a local shop that deals with older cars and distributors. Call your dealers, NAPA(some have machine shops), even places like Midas for a suggestion. They may rebuild yours for around $100 or so (or much less than 350!).

The 1995 vin X 4.0l explorer didn't use a CMP.
The 214 refers to the CKP.

OK, that being said, my x series has one?!?
I really wish I could remember the deal on this. I was a Ford journeymen in 1995 but I don't remember the particulars. I do know the CKP is used for CID and not the CMP. The ring on the crank is a 36-1 for TDC. If you disconnect your CKP you will go into FEM at best.

I tested my CKP and got .01v variance, diagnostics say to replace it if less than .1v.
I switched it and still get a 214. I don't think I backprobed it deep enough when I tested it.
I cleaned the terminals on the CMP, still a 214. I tried to remove the CMP but couldn't get the bolt loose. The CMP is a hall effect generator so it shouldn't be bad, maybe dirty, but I would expect it fail not simply give a low voltage error.
The good news is that I found it at Advance Auto for $230 with a lifetime warranty. NAPA has it for $210, but I don't know about the warranty. The sensor is sometimes referred to as a Crank Angle Sensor by some parts houses.

Does anyone know if I'm going to blow up Snowball by not fixing this sensor? It's been throwing a code since September of 2007 when I bought the truck... Someone must know if there are ramifications...

Couldn't find anything specific at the Advanced Auto website. All I got was sort of a home page... Also, unfortunately, NAPA does NOT have this part. I ordered it from my local store, and he had to call their special order desk. They told him that they have a part number for it, but don't have it and don't have access to it.

The Ford dealer is looking for the part for me (been about a week and a half now), and I live in the boonies without a local shop where someone could rebuild it, so I'm stuck up the tree right now. This is ridiculous.
