Recently replaced the OEM thermostat in my 1995 XLT (only lasted 30 years!!! Ford POS....lolz)-- symtom was opening too early and not allowing engine to get up to temp (poor gas mileage) and the cabin took forever to warm up. Verified the old unit bad using the pot of hot water on the stove with the infrared temp gun method, also verified the new thermo same way before installing -- new one opened dead on 192F. Also replaced the rubber sealing ring -- no other gaskets or sealants required.
Replacements available at various temps -- I went with 192F, which turned out to be correct. Just a note of interest is the marking on the OEM stat below. Stamped "92" and "SG" (?) below that. Just thought it was weird they didn't stamp it 192.
Anywho, new thermo works like a champ, cabin now heats up like a Swedish sauna and engine idles soooo much smoother.
