I have a problem with several of the gauges on my ford ranger. The temp gauge never rises above cold, the gas gauge drops to quickly (from full to 1/4 tank in about 3gallons) and my oil gauge drops down when the key is turned on and never rises when the engine is started. Do I have three problems or one issue related to all of them?

...how long have you had the truck and what is it's history???

1995 Ranger Guage Problems

We were given the truck about a month ago. It has not been driven on the street for over a year. It has 204,000 mile on it and is in good running condition. I had it smoged and it passed clean, and I just got it back from getting the clutched replaced. The man who owned it was the original owner and took fairly good care of it. I don't know much of its history.

My son had a '99 ranger and it also had serious problems with the gauges. The fuel gage had quit altogether and several of the other gages were also out. I don't remember which of the others they were. I never was able to resolve the issue with that truck before it was totaled in a traffic accident.

I mechanic that did the smog check suggested that I check to see if someone had removed the thermosate which would possibly be causing the low reading on the temp gauge. I pulled it today and it was working ok. I was about to replace the the sending unit in the thermosate housing and decided to wait. I also have a engine check lite on. I also replaced the upper oxy sensor at the recommendation of the smog check mechanic. The ck lite is still on.

The truck really runs great. I just need to resolve some of these problems without sinking to much money in this thing. The mileage just does not justify spending to much on it.
Thanks for your help,
Roger

...my first thoughts on the guages would be that you have a loose connection at the instrument cluster for all of them to act up...it may be barely attached...
...a temp sensor for the truck i think is 30 bucks...don't ask how i know...
...most auto parts like autozone and kragen will read your codes for free...get them read and bring them back and we will try and help you with your problem...while you are there, pick up a haynes or chilton's book, about 20 bucks, and it's well worth it...;)

...btw, what motor and trans do you have???
