Easier to find a 4 wheel drive transmission. You could convert your transmission if you take it completely apart to change the output shaft and tailhousing. Front subframe is a 6 bolt swap. The engine comes out of the van a lot faster through the bottom to swap it to the new subframe.
The bellhousing of the transmission for the 3.0L engine is different than the one which is used with a 4.0L engine. The transmission is different too. The 3.0L uses a 4R44E transmission in the 1996 model, and a 5R44E in the 1997 model.
Look at the pictures that I posted of the engine removal on my 94 awd van. The subframe holds the engine, and front axle as an assembly. I picked the body up off of the engine, it took 2 people working on it about half a day. The transmission, you can use one from a 4.0L awd van if you swap the bellhousing from the 3.0L transmission.
