1996 explorer
Hey guys. Love this site. Someone hit my 1996 explorer in the rear. When I looked at the damabe the axle it seems has shifted back . In other words the tire is now close to the rear of the fender. It has also put a crack in the leaf spring and shifted the shackles to the rear about 2'3 inches . What can I do to solve the axle problem
THANKS

How you fix it depends on which leaf the crack is in,
If it is the top one with the eyes on it, that means you need a new leaf pack.
You can get one from a dealer,LMC truck has them , or go to a junkyard and get a passenger side leaf that is not all sagged out, ,
Also , check the front spring mount and make sure it is not damaged ,

the frame is probably bent if you got hit in the rear.

normally I'd say fix it enough to sell it and get another as a frame once bent will never be the same, but you could have a frame shop bend it back

thanks corky it is a leaf spring. Do you know what I should do about the axle ?

Wellll, that depends on what happened to the axle. Is the housing bent or is the axle only set back because of the leaf spring failure?
If it is just the leafsprings, do as corkey said, go get a replacement set from a junkyard or get a brand new set from LMCtruck dot com. They aren't all that much new.
I would replace both sides because if it got hit hard enough to break a leafspring on one side, it may have weakened the other side.
If the axle tube is bent by the impact, you could replace that as well from the junkyard. Search the JY's near you @ www.car-part.com
Be sure to replace it with the same gear ratio that is in the truck now. If you are unsure of your ratio, look on the drivers door. There is a label there that will have the axle code listed. You can decode what the ratio is by going here:

Don't forget to get replacement sets of shackles.
