Hello all,

I have a 1996 Explorer 4.0 4WD 4R55E with about 135K on it. When I got it 2 years ago, it had really bad shift behavior; I put a rebuilt valve body on the transmission from a rebuilder off Ebay; it came with all solenoids, etc. That settled things down for awhile. This truck doesn't get a lot of miles on it, so only about 15,000 miles have gone on it since then.

Last month I started getting a P0756 CEL code and the tranny started going into Limp-home mode. I started by replacing the speed sensor on the transfer case (easy to get to and some searches indicated this could cause an issue); no change. I then dropped the pan and replaced the Shift Solenoid B. That solved the issue; shifted smoother than it has since I got it, no issues, even eliminated the 2-1 shift bump that it's had since I got it.

Fast forward a couple weeks, and now I'm getting the CEL P0756 again, no limp-home mode this time, just delayed shifting into 2nd, like it rev's to 3000 before shifting no matter what sort of throttle load. When it does shift into 2nd, it shifts fine, no hard shift, etc. Downshifting appears to work just fine as well.

So, my question to the advanced transmission-whisperers out there; is this transmission damaged internally and the P0756 is an indication of something like a band issue, or is there something else I should be checking? The internal wiring harness was in excellent condition, and the fluid was clean and filled properly.

Any recommendations? This is our in-town errand truck, so it doesn't warrant any big-ticket cost, so if I can't figure this out, we'll drive it like this until it gives further details by way of exploding the transmission somewhere.

Thanks for your time, and thanks for having this site as a resource, it's been really helpful.

Update

An update; zeroing in on this as an ECU issue; disconnected the bulkhead connection to the ECU, inspected the pins (no issues), reconnected the connector. 2 days of driving so far and problem has not reappeared, trans is shifting normally in all driving modes. Have another ECU on hand and if the problem reappears will swap it out to see.
