'96 Limited V8 AWD
Well I have been looking for an Explorer for quite some time. A friend is the manager at a dealership and he said that I could get into a '96 Explorer limited with V8 and AWD. This thing has everything, from leather to six CD, JBL sound system, onboard Computer, Moonroof, brush guard, and a separate climate control and radio for back seat passengers. It's crazy, what am I gonna be able to mess with? He said that it is mine for $11,200 which is a great price. It has 69k miles on it but it lists at $17,500. If worst comes to Worst I can sell it at a Profit a year later, but I think I will enjoy it. Beggers can't be choosers and this is why I was wondering about the difference between 4x4 and AWD. Well I can still do the performance upgrades, I could make this Explorer FLY. I could basically do all the same stuff I could to my '87 Mustang GT and still bomb through the snow, but this thing has no distributor, to my surprise!

Congrats on your new purchase, you'll love it. The main difference between the 4WD system and the AWD system is that the AWD requires no driver intervention, and cannot be locked into 4 high or 4 low. This means that you will be at a disadvantage to 4WD vehicles offroad and in very deep snow. If you want more info just run a search for 4WD and AWD on this site, because there is a LOT of info.

Again, congrats!

From the way it sounds this won't be taken on the trail all that much. If that's the case the AWD will work great. The AWD helps for dragging in several ways, but won't work as well where torque is needed. Like stephen stated you lose the low range that the 4x4 has. If you wish to take it on the trails or find yourself in need on low range you always could invest about 2500 for the atlas t-case and get real 4x4. You'd still be under the sticker. But like I said, for speed and the road....the AWD is the best bet.

I'd also like to welcome you to the site. You'll find anything and everything all right here.

My '79 Bronco

Well for the real deep mud and fun on the trails I have a 79 Bronco that My father and I restored for my first vehicle. I've had it for five years, but at 9mpg I took it off the road. It's got 33x12.50 R15 BFGoodrich AT's on it with no lift. I think it has 4.10 gears stock, with the gas milage I'm not surprised. The 351M could pull a house, so for the dirty work on the trail I'll have to fix that one up, But with the payments on the Explorer that will not be in the near future. It a C6 automatic and was top of the line at the time, minus the AC, but You should see under the hood. You can actually get at the Spark plugs and see the entire block with plenty of room even by the master cylinder.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as we enjoy ours. Its really nice, but it can take us places that a car or minivan wouldnt, and then some. Pls its got those BFG's and that lowered look, so it looks really tough :)

Yeah I like the Limited package. I, like Grant, like the lowered look hte Limited has to it, and when you're offroad or in the snow you can always raise it up.

Yeah, Stephen knows where its at :) I like the color of your Explorer Stephen. Oxford White, correct? Thats not one of the offered colors is it? I never liked that tan cream color, I thought it looked dirty, but my mom likes it

Yep its Oxford White. When I went to shop for the new 97 I was sad to discover that they had replaced it with that creamy tan! So I special ordered it.

That creamy tan huh!

Well the one i'm looking at is that color you guys like so much. But with a used vehicle you get what you get. It has a brush guard that is painted the same. I like it but there's always a paint job right.
Thanks a lot, guess it will look dirty! HAHAHA.

The tan is okay, I just dont like it as much as the white. Actually one of the good things about it is that it will never look dirty! Another downside to that color though is that you can't touch it up. Its a pearl coat. If you have a big chip or something you're stuck with it or repaint the panel. Whats really a pretty color is the white color on the 98+ Limited. Its a pearl like the tan but its whiter.

Don't sweat it, you'll love it!

Done deal 96 Limited

Well all I have to do is the final paper work and start paying for it. I can't wait to get it. We are all so materialistic aren't we. Well you only live once.

Welcome to the Limited club! You know Stephen, we ought to start a club for Limited Explorers of allyears, theres now a good handful of people on here that own them.

I'm in if you do?

I love to just mess around with my car and talk about it so this site is great for me. I probably won't do any serious offroading because I don't want to damage it. Besides it's too much like luxury and I'll be paying for it for the next 5 years. Being a student I have to slave during the summer, throwing concrete building pools, and part time while at school. The good thing is that my new job is at Advanced Auto Parts and I get 20% off and 40% once a year. I've been scouting the computer for accessories and performance mods.
Well please let me know.

I'm game if you guys are. :)

Well I pick it up on Thursday !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm official Thursday. I'll let ya know how it is. I've never had anything like this so I'm excited. Guess I'll be an official member on Thursday.
Let me know!
Later

So, you guys really wanna do it or were you just messin? What all needs to be done. I think it'd be lots of fun.

How involved is it

I was just wondering what there would be to do it. Would it just be a subheading on the main forum page or what? It would probably be a good idea because there are alot of options that are on the Limiteds that aren't on others. Go for it!!!!!!!!!!

Well it'll have to go through with Rick if its gona be part of the page. I'd also like to know how involved it would be. Lets start a signup sheet of woh all is interested in it. I have a message board and chat room on my website, and we can discuss it in there. Just send me emails or reply to this thread with your name, and I'll get a sheet going. Hows that for a start.
