Hey guys, I'm new to this site so I don't know where everything is at. Here's my scenario. I found a guy that has a good deal on a 1996 Explorer with a 5.0. The motor has low compression in some of the cylinders, therefore, i am thinking about just getting another motor for it if I buy it. I would like to find a 5.0 out of a mustang for it. I have found a few motors locally, but I don't know what years will are work. I am pretty sure they will bolt right up, but will I need anything such as wiring or any computers? Does anybody know which years would fit the best with not much need for additional parts. The motors i found were out of a 91 and a 94 GT Mustang. Thank you very much for any information.

You need to stick with a 5.0out of an Explorer or Mountaineer. Mustang engines use a different balance 28oz as opposed to the 50oz on Explorers. Mustangs use a distributor Explorers have DIS.

Basically the only thing shared between a Mustang and Explorer is the block.

Mustang guys use explorer motor parts, on a budget, for horsepower and torque.

The GT 40 Explorer heads have awesome combustion chambers, and the upper intake Is often called a cobra intake. The short block is a high output version with larger cam journals for the roller cam. If I remember correctly our pistons are forged not cast.

In your shoes I would consider buying a rebuild book, A cheep engine stand, and a rebuild kit. Depending on your confidence and free time.
