I have a 1996 Ford Explorer 4X4 XLT 4.0 pushing 300k. My transmission has been occasionally slipping for the last few years. Well, it finally died about 2 weeks ago. I pulled the transmission and was ready to replace it with one that came out of a 1995 model. However, the 95 model appears to be a vacuum based model and my 96 is electric.
So I called around and have been unable to find a used one in my area, Northeast Tennessee. So I started checking on getting it rebuilt and was getting some ridiculous numbers. Next I started checking prices of buying a remanned one. Both options were asking for more than the truck is worth.
My wife and I really love this truck so the most feasible option is for me to rebuild it myself. However I am having trouble finding exactly what transmission I have. I can find no plates or markings on it. My research makes it look like it may be a 4R44E or a 4R55E but I am not sure.
Any suggestions on how to be sure? VIN # 1FMDU34X2TZB41582
