I found a local classified ad for a 1996 V8 AWD and they say it ran just fine but now the anti theft system wont let it start because its broken.

I did a search that didn't turn up much. does anyone know if this is easy to fix?

I want to buy it ASAP because they only want $300 for it and its a V8 wich is a very good deal.

but it depends on how easy it is to fix the theft system

thank you for your help

96 didn't have the PATS lock.. Didn't show up in Explorers till 98. It may be other things like lack of fuel, spark, etc..

maybe?

I have a 98 Mounty... on mine if you don't use the keyless entry remote to turn the alarm off it will not start unless you hold the unlock button on the driver's side door (that is the power lock button that unlocks all the doors above the window switches). When I hold that down the alarm chirps once then you can turn the key while continuing to hold down the button and it will start.

Not sure sure if that is a universal fix or not, but it works on mine.

96 Explorers didn't have PATS but they could have come with RAP, Remote Anti-Theft Personality module and when the alarm is activated, it will disable the power to the starter motor. There should be a flashing red LED in the dash to indicate that the alarm has been triggered unless it's some after-market alarm system that doesn't have that indicator LED.
