1996 Front Rotor Minimum Thickness

I am replacing the front brake pads on my 1996 4 wheel drive Explorer and am thinking about replacing the front rotors as well. I measured the thickness at 25mm with a caliper. It has 109,000 and this is the second set of pads I'll be replacing.

What does the Ford service manual say the minimum thickness the rotors should be for a 4x4 1996 explorer?

My manual say .964 inches. I believe that equals 24.48 mm. You're getting close. If they need to be cut, it's time for new rotors.

My Haynes manual says .810" and I'm not sure I trust that. Thanks for the reply.

You can get a good set of rotors for a hundred bucks. I actually bought the 30 dollar ones from NAPA and they feel good. I replaced all four rotors, calipers and pads and all the materials cost were 300 dollars. It brakes just like new again.

My plan is to use the Raybestos PG rotors with the Wagner ceramic pads (which I already ordered through Rock Auto). I used the Raybestos on my Avalon and it was easy getting the old rotors off.

It can be real hard removing the explorer rotors as I read in this forum.
