Hey everyone -
I need some guidance. I am pretty good with cars and such but not too familiar with Auto Transmissions.
My daughters explorer has 205,000 miles on it and recently it has been having wild shift flare, skipping gears and sometimes can't go over 30 MPH and they have to pull over, turn it off start it again and go again.

Here is how the story goes. For a few years it had the shift flare and garage shift into drive and reverse, and they lived with it. I looked around to try and help and found this forum. I adjusted the bands following the procedure on this site and it worked better for a while. I didn't change the fluid cause it wasn't too bad and my experience with explorer transmisions are what gave them the nickname "exploder" when you change the fluid and filter.

After a few week it sets the code for the overdive band and has been having shift flare, skipping gears and sometimes can't go over 30 MPH and they have to pull over, turn it off start it again and go again.:thumbdwn:
I am thinking it needs a rebuild valve body with the new solenoids and updated seperator plate + gasket. but it has over 200k. I am not sure it has ever been rebuilt cause the bought it with 150k on it. We added lucas to it a while ago just to see if that would help, it did a little (and couldn't hurt anything).

What transmission does this thing have? A 5R55E?

Please advise. I talked to a transmission guy and he said it needs a rebuild (seems answer to everything). But neither I nor my kids can afford it. Does anyone in the SOCAL area have a good used one for this they would sell me if it seems it needs that?

The overdrive servo is probably bad, as for the valve body with that kind of millage it probably needs to be replaced, the valves and bores wear and changing the things you mentioned probably won't help. A rebuild is probably needed.

It is a 5R55E but 97 s had 2 sensors on the out side of the case, newer ones only had one, a replacement will have to be a 97 with the 2 sensors in order to work right with the 97 computer.
