1997 Aerostar. Starter, solenoid or battery issues?

My daughter has a 1997 Aerostar. For some period of time, she has had issues starting it...turn key three or four times, nothing...then it would just start up fine. Now it is not starting at all. We are thinking it is the solenoid. I don't know how to begin to fix this and as we are currently experiencing employment issues, no money to take to garage to fix. Any thoughts on the best way to fix this issue and diagrams to do the same? Thanks...Mom
