I'm not sure if this is the right place to post first, or if I should start in the new member forum.
I've been trying to track down a loud clunking when turning [only] my AWD [v8 5.0L]. After fairly extensive inspection, I'm fairly sure that it's the transfer case. The fluid was changed and after test driving for tops 4 miles it was filled with metal shavings. I think that for some reason or another the gears started slipping and are now beyond repair.
I'm looking into getting another one, but the few dismantlers in the area are asking $600 +core for a used transfer case. I found it on rockauto.com for total around $1000.
You guys have any suggestions on were I could get one for less than an arm and a leg?
Also:
I drained and replaced the front differential, the fluid didn't seem to have shavings but was not full [~1.5 cups instead of 1.6 qts]. Do you think it would safe to use this old differential or should I get a new one as well?
I'm stalking the craigslists in my area for a parts car, are there any other makes/models that use the same transfer case?
