I was driving to work and stopped at a red light. When the light turned green and I applied the gas pedal the explorer barely moved. It took several minutes to get to 30mph. When I stopped at the next light the motor died and wouldnt restart. A private mechanic did a compression test and concluded I needed a new motor because there was only 60psi compression in the cylinders. I find it hard to believe that a motor that has never given and trouble could go bad without warning. I recently called ford and they believe it could be a mass air flow sensor or some other electrical issue. Does anyone have any advice before I spend more money for nothing. 1997 explorer sport 4x4 with 4.0sohc

I think you're on the right track to get a second opinion.

Odds are that the "new motor" is close... :-( Read up on timing chain issues on the SOHC. Sounds like yours is gone and hence you have little or no valve action. Ultimately, the "new motor" isn't required but depending on what needs replacing, it might be cheaper. Good luck
