well BRB, were gonna go find out LOL, I have the 4r70w and he has whatever the 5 spd is......wonder if that will help him in the end. BRB lol

I've driven the 5 speeds, they have a lot more top-end power. In the end it's gonna be based on the better driver. If you were both pro-racers, I'd give you the win for like 1/8th mile, but 1/4 or more he'd take it.

Being a 97 you probably have throttle slack as well, so you might not even be able to open it up all the way unless you already fixed that.

ok so they are both autos, but his is a 5spd auto and mine is the 4 spd obviously.

but I beat him easily, by 80km/h I was 2 car lengths on him and still goin. we did a brake and rev too and same outcome. I jumped a couple of feet in front off the line but then It just kept on goin.

What was the distance? Even with auto's if you jump on it with AWD it can cause your clutch to engage putting you into AWD thus robbing some power. I think around 100kmh he'd start making up the distance. Figure at 80kmh you didn't even hit your last gear and he'd have about 2 left.

Umm he's a v8 with awd, there is no clutch he's awd all the time. Your probably thinking of the v6's auto 4wd. At 80kph (50mph) your still in 2nd gear so you were probably still pulling pretty hard. And I'm not to surprised to read you one the race up to that speed, didn't think you would win by that much though, you would probably keep winning until ~100kph (62mph) and you shifted into 3rd gear, then it would have been over for you. The jump from 2nd to 3rd gear sucks and will kill your acceleration.

hmm thenmaybe we went faster the that because I hit 3rd and kept gaining and he confirmed that I gained the entire time, and I know it went into 3rd because 1st is over pretty quick and it noticibly shifts into 3rd from 2nd at WOT.

i have 98 5.0 awd did some mods

so hey guys ive got a 1998 ford explorer red 5.0 awd drive put 50 series flowmaster and 3 inch pipe and kand n air system when i was running her to day from calif to portland she seemed to shut down at 90 miles per hour is ther something i need to do to fix this

You probably hit the artificial speed limiter, most of them kick in about 106mph. If you want to turn it off you'll need to get a computer tuner. www.hensonperformance.com is where I suggest people go to get one. He's a vendor here on the site and tunes a lot of explorers, and everybody on here has been extremely happy with his tunes, and his customer service.

+1 on James. He makes great tunes!!!

I actually figured the 3rd gen would have you. I raced a 5.0 with nearly every bolt-on and I always came out on top:D. Granted I have the 4.6 V8 and we were side by side every time with me winning by maybe a fender, but I only have a tune, efan and muffler(3rd cat gone and 2.5" exhuast as well)

I can say this though, next spring I will be nothing but a speck in his rearview mirror:(

the 4.6L runs like 15.8 stock so that makes sense that your ahead abit. but with a good H/C/I (or just a better cam and tune) he could easily leave you behind.

I ran a 15.9 stock:D (with muffler of course)

But a full bolt-on 5.0 minus the H/C/I (CAI, Tune, Full exhaust:headers, FM 50, and I think no cats? 4:10's, MSD, etc) with only the front seats and 4x4 removed should have pulled on me, but it didn't happen.

Now(next spring) he will have full interior, I will strip mine and get my ass handed to me:( So I need to start saving pennies and mod up to make this as least embarrasing as possible.

I'm talking about the viscous liquid clutch in the T/C that transfers more power to the front wheels.

The power distribution is the same at all times, idle or full throttle.

*sigh* The power distribution changes if you get the tires to break free. I've gotten my 5.0 AWD to peel out from a stop and pulled into a parking lot a few miles later, I could feel the front wheels biting hard while I turned into a parking spot because the fluid did not cool by then. It's a little harder to get an AWD to peel out, but not impossible. It's even more pronounced if you race on dirt or gravel as your wheels will spin even easier.

If you still don't understand what I mean I give up.

It's not that the front is getting "more" power. The split is always 65/35. Normally in a turn the coupler would slip allowing the front and rear to turn at different speeds, but after you get it really hot, then it won't let it slip as much so it feels like your getting more power to the front but in reality the power is the same. And that's only going to happen at really low speeds, at higher speeds with more power going through the coupler it will still slip unless your beating the crap out of it and getting things super hot.

As far as you peeling out, yeah it can be possible for a split second under the right conditions, the rear tires on a slick surface, and the front tires on a sticky surface. Mashing the gas will let the coupler slip and the rear tires spin for a split second, it's not like your able to do a burnout.

A split second can make a huge difference in a race, my point is you can't pin everything on the vehicle. With an experienced driver in a pinto an inexperienced driver could lose in a Viper. It's the same arguement people say about Nascar, it's about the vehicle to an extent, but when each vehicle is limited to the same exact specs it's the Driver's and teams who win the race.

Actually I won't have full interior. The rear seats have been removed, and iln going to build a box that will make the floor level, and then have storage under it. But with the box I doubt it will save me much weight.

With a box and stuff stored in it, it may end up being heavier!!! Are you going to make it so that it is easily removable? Either way, I will be getting a nice view of the rear so at least keep it clean for me:D
