Brown wire mod is almost a necessity for 4405 in my opinion especially if you wheel it. It's too simple and cheap not to do it. Those speed sensors are definitely a big issue with these units... $80 !! Pssh Yea right I got mine at a junk yard for free while I was there pulling some larger items. The cheapest I found new was still over $60 besides the gem the only other electronics that could maybe cause you too be locked in 4 hi is TOD relay and the other relay behind the gem (forget the dang name of it)
In my experience bad shaft speed sensors lock you out of any kind of 4wd as a safety measure (happened to me) but then again I have a 96 with a factory 2wd mode but I don't think it matters too much the gem just has to cut power to the brown wire but yea as mentioned would definitely be worth getting forscan. Wouldn't throw parts at it until you eliminated most of the culprits
