I just bought this 97 Explorer from a guy who was having trouble with the 4wd wanting to engage when you make a sharp right or left turn. He took it to Ford and had a software update which corrected the problem for a week, now its doing it again. Can someone tell me is it possible for me to just disconnect the 4wd and use it as a 2wd until I have time to find out the problem. If I can do it this way, please advise HOW? Thanks

i think on that year 4x4 is controlled by the gem model behind the radio which also controls lights etc.

if you remove the front drive shaft it should stop from locking all the wheels to the same speed.

Welcome To The Forum! Look up the Brown-Wire-Mod, and yes the 4wd is controlled by the GEM, its possible that the clutch in the transfer case is stuck on, try disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes and see if that corrects the problem.

Weird

I drove my Explorer all day yesterday and it did not do it at all??????Probably atleast 75 miles around town.....What do I donow please make suggestions...Thx.

You can disconnect the shift motor to the transfer case. That will turn off the 4wd.To fix the problem it sounds like the speed sensors on transfer case it should have codes in the module if that is it. if it has no codes try cleaning the speed sensors over time they get metal fillings built up on them one is at the out put shaft and other one is under shift motor. just remove them and wipe them clean. It will look like a grey paste on sensor that is the cause of locking.
